Millie, a lovely 7-year old boxer.

I’ve often heard you say that all I was missing was the power of speech. But in fact, I do talk. Pretty clearly, as well. And always honestly. I don’t know how to lie. But sometimes you don’t understand me, so that’s why I’m putting my thoughts on paper.

After many tests on me, and a lot of hesitation from you, you took me to the vet’s yesterday morning. When we arrived there, I was wagging my tail, because the vet’s is where there are bags of dog food and all sorts of smells, which you never even seem to notice. Other dogs’ smells. I went happily downstairs to see where these excellent smells were coming from.

And then, I don’t remember anything. It seems that I fell asleep. While I slept, I swam in the sea, and had fun with my friend Athos and played with the children.
When I woke, I heard your footsteps.

Then, wagging my tail again, I went back up those same steps and I licked you all over.
What a look you had on your face! What had happened to you? Had the sky fallen in?
And then, suddenly, you seemed surprised and happy …

So you see, I am walking, drinking, eating and marking my territory...
Just like always.
Just like yesterday morning.
What did you expect? We have incredible powers of recovery, even when the sky does fall in. Didn’t you know that?

One day, perhaps you’ll explain cancer, anaemia and a lung operation to me. But not today – it seems very complicated and I’m sure I won’t understand it all...

By the way, when do we get to eat that roast chicken you bought?

Millie
